I've been approached by many parents with this question so here are 3 tips that will be useful.
1) FOR YOUNGER AND PRESCHOOL AGED KIDS
Put on some music and get them moving to it! Everyday objects around the house can be used as instruments; toothbrushes as drumsticks, plastic bowls as drums. Anything that can make a sound will do the trick so be as creative as you like! Kids can tap along and make their own sounds while they listen to the music.
2) FOR KIDS TAKING INSTRUMENT LESSONS:
Take them to a lesson before buying or renting the instrument. Purchasing an instrument can be a big financial commitment so being able to experience what its like beforehand gives a child an opportunity get a feel for the instrument and it peaks their curiosity. A child can be taught many beginner concepts without have a piano at home for the first few lessons because there is so much to learn in addition to playing actual songs.
Also, little ones LOVE keyboards more than they do acoustic pianos. They like changing to different sounds and using the drum machines and all the other fun stuff that an acoustic piano doesn't have. There are many introductory activities for piano that don’t involve having the instrument so they can still learn in the meantime.
3) FOR OLDER KIDS LEARNING INSTRUMENTS OR VOCALS:
Encourage them to choose their favourite song and ask the teacher to incorporate even a tiny part of it into the lesson. Yes, the fundamentals and technical aspects of playing are important, but so is having FUN. There is nothing like the pride a student shows when they can play their favourite song for their friends and family. Smiles all around!
So there are just a few tips for you to try out. More to come...
